Sri Harkishan, the eighth guru, had stayed at this place for a few months as a guest of Raja Jai Singh. From that point of time, the place has become a place of pilgrimage for both Hindus and Sikhs alike. People from all around pay their respect to the memory of Guru Harkrishan, who has been nominated as the successor by the seventh Guru, Sri Har Rai. He died in the year 1661. It is said about him that when he was only a little over five years old, he had been tried and tested as an absolute fearless and fully illuminated soul.
The Bangla Sahib Gurudwara in Delhi is one of the most prominent Sikh gurdwara, or Sikh house of worship. It can be recognized instantly by its stunning golden dome and tall flagpole. During the stay of eighth Sikh Guru here, there was a smallpox and cholera epidemic, and Guru Har Krishan helped the suffering by giving aid and fresh water from the well at this house. The water of the house is now said to have healing properties, and is taken by Sikhs throughout the world back to their homes. The good thing about the Gurdwara is that, this place is not restricted for the people of Sikh religion alone
The grounds of the Bangla Sahib include the temple, a kitchen, a large pond, a school and an art gallery. In accordance with the tradition of all Sikh Gurdwaras, the concept of langar is practiced, and all people may eat in this Delhi Gurdwara kitchen. At the Gurdwara, visitors are required to cover their hair and are not allowed to wear shoes.
