Delhi

Delhi is the second largest metropolitan city of the country. The city of Delhi has a population of around 13 million. Located in northern part of India on the banks of the River Yamuna, Delhi has the political status of union territory and is known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT).A constitutional amendment in 1991 gave Delhi a special status among the Union Territories: Delhi has its own legislative assembly. New Delhi is also the capital of India.
The lengthy history and the historic association as the capital of India has enriched the culture of India. There are many monuments of significance found in the city. The Archaeological Survey of India has recognized 175 monuments in Delhi as national heritage sites. The several architectural marvels of the Indian capital includes Jama Masjid and Red Fort. Three World Heritage Sites namely the Red Fort, Qutab Minar and Humayun's Tomb are also located in Delhi. Other monuments of significance includes the India Gate, the Jantar Mantar and the Purana Qila. The Lotus Temple, Laxminarayan Temple and Akshardham have been built in recent time and are definitely worth a visit.

Apart from the monuments there are other important places in Delhi. Raj Ghat and associated memorials houses of notable personalities are located in the city of Delhi. New Delhi houses several government buildings and official residences which are reminiscent of the British colonial architecture. Important structures of include the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Secretariat, Rajpath, the Parliament of India and Vijay Chowk.



Many national events of the country such as Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Birthday are celebrated with great pomp in Delhi. On the Independence Day of India, the Prime Minister of the country addresses the nation from the Red Fort. The Republic Day Parade showcases India's cultural diversity and military might.
