The Jama Masjid situated in old Delhi was built by the fifth Mughal emperor Shah Jehan. The construction of this beautiful mosque was started in 1644 and completed in 1656. Nearly 5000 people were employed for its construction. The Jama Masjid which is situated on the west of Hussainabad Imambara is one of the most beautiful monuments built by the Mughals.
Jama Masjid is by far the largest of the mosques in India where 25,000 devotees can offer prayer together. Jama Masjid is situated opposite to the Red Fort,and in recent times surrounded by shops on all sides.

This mosque is an unique example of Mughal architecture. The mosque built of red sandstones and white marbles consists of 260 pillars and 15 domes. The mosque has three gateways, four towers and a couple of minerets.The three main domes are built of white marbles. The main prayer hall is located in the west of the masjid.On the north relics of Muhammed is situated. The domes, minerets of the mosque, the long balcony, five storeys, the decorated interiors all bear a mark of Muslim art.
The mosque was constructed in such a manner that it can withstand the ravages of more than three hundred years.The walls of the mosque was built in such a fashion so that it may not collapse during earthquake.
Towards the Eastern entrance you will find tomb of Sultan Ahmed Shah which consists of grave of Ahmed Shah the first, Mohummed Shah and Qutbud-din Ahmed Shah the second the three notable rulers of Gujrat.
Usually you have to follow certain norms if you are visiting Jama Masjid. Non Muslims are not allowed to enter the premises from 12.30- 2.00pm.
So visit this Jama Masjid which is a classic example of a combination of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Your sightseeing in India will remain incomplete without your visit to Jama Masjid.
