The city of Agra which came into prominence during the Mughal Age is one of the world heritage sites as sightseeings in Agra consists of some of the exquisite work of art of Mughals. Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah is one of them.
Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah was built in memory Mirza Ghiyas and Asmat Begum, parents of Nur Jahan, the beautiful wife of the Mughal emperor Jehangir. Mirza Ghiyas who was popularly known as Ghiyas Beg was a poor merchant of Persia. However fortune smiled on him when his wife gave birth to a baby girl.

He managed to come to the Mughal emperor Akbar'r court. Afterwards he was made the minister and also treasurer of Akbar. When Jehangir ascended the throne Mirza Ghiyas rose to the status of Wazir. He was also entitled Itmad-ud-Daulah which meant the pillar of the state. Mehr-un-Nissa better known as Nur Jahan, the beautiful daughter of Itmad-ud-Daulah, who later married Jahangir was an impressive personality. It was Nur Jahan who built theTomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah in memory of her parents.
Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah is possibly the first ever monuments built in white marbles.Itmad-ud-Daulah was buried in the beautiful garden situated by the side of the river Yamuna. The marvellous white stoned tomb, the minerets, the embellished corners, the arabesque, the floral designs, the archways and marble works together have made it typical of Mughal art.
Tomb of Itmad-ud-Daulah is often regarded as the predecessor of the Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world built by Shah Jehan as a tribute to his wife Mumtaj Mahal.The beautiful garden surrounding the tomb, the four minerets at the four corners, the splendid marble works all bear a close resemblance to the Taj Mahal.
