Agra Fort

If you want to bear witness to Mughal art and architecture then visit Agra, where you will be able to view not only Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world but other specimens of Mughal art. Agra Fort being one of them.

Agra Fort which is located 2 kilometers away from Taj Mahal is built of red sandstones. The fort has two gates- the Delhi gate and the Amar Singh Gate. Though during the Mughal era Delhi Gate was used as main entrance to the fort, now Amar Singh Gate is opened for the tourists. Agra Fort which stretches over 2.5 kilometers along the river Yamuna has some of the excellent buildings and monuments inside it built by various Mughal emperors at different times.
Once you enter Agra Fort you will be able to view some of the wonderful piece of work of art of the Mughal age.

  • Jehangiri Mahal - built by Akbar for his son Jehangir.
  • Khas Mahal - a private palace built by Shah Jehan in 1631.
  • Mussamman Burj- built by Shah Jehan for his wife Mumtaj. Later Shah Jehan spent his last days here as a captive of his son Aurangzeb.
  • Diwan-i-khas - Built by Shah Jehan where he used to meet other monarchs and ambassadors.
  • Sheesh Mahal - dressing room of royal family.
  • Macchhi Bhawan - which was supposedly the harem.
  • Diwan-i-aam - built by Shah Jehan where he used to meet his officials and common people.
  • Moti Masjid - commonly known as Pearl Mosque built of white marbles.
  • Nagina Masjid - built by Shah Jehan for royal ladies.
  • Mina Masjid - market for ladies belonging to royal family.
  • Hammam-i-Shahi- used during summers.


The best time to visit Agra Fort, Uttar Pradesh is November to February. Agra Fort is opened every day from 6 am to 5.30 pm.

A large number of foreigners who visits every year to have a view of the Taj becomes spellbound by the beauty of these sightseeings of Agra.
