The golden age of Agra began with the Mughals. It was then known as Akbarabad and remained the capital of the Mughal Empire under Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Later Shah Jahan shifted his capital to Shahjahanabad in the year 1649. The decline of the Mughal Empire saw the influence of Marathas and Jats over the city. It was known as Agra when it passed into the hands of the British Raj in 1803.
The city of Agra remains a major tourist destination due to its splendid Mughal-era buildings. Some of the best attractions of Agra are:
The Taj Mahal – Taj Mahal is a symbol of Love. A monument of love constructed by Shah Jahan for his queen Mumtaz Mahal.
Agra Red Fort – The 10th century saw it as a simple brick and mud fortress on the banks of the river Yamuna. Under the reign of Akbar, the Mughal ruler, it was remodeled along the lines of its forerunner, which answers for its irregular outer walls. Agra Red Fort was originally meant to be a fortress, but afterwards the site was partly converted into a palace during the rule of Shah Jahan, who lived in the fortress and died there as a prisoner of his son Aurangzeb.
